Realizing the Jesuit Vision for North Philadelphia

We stand today on the threshold of realizing the decades-old vision the Jesuits had for the Prep. At the center of it all is an unwavering devotion to our mission: caring for the minds, hearts, souls, bodies, and character of each student on his journey to becoming a Man For and With Others.

The Forever the Prep campaign calls each of us to act boldly to advance the Jesuit vision for St. Joseph’s Prep. This vision evolves, but the steadfast commitment to our mission has and will remain.

Forever the Prep: Rooted in Vision. Driven by Mission.

A Letter from the President

Dear Friends of the Prep,

Because of our roots, we are compelled to seek excellence in the pursuit of that which is for the greater glory of God. This is the mission that brought the Jesuits to Philadelphia in 1733 and gave rise to St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in 1851. With feet planted firmly in their present and eyes trained to the future, our predecessors knew that for the mission to thrive, animating this work would look different over time. This foresight — this vision — obligates us to continually evolve in how we offer this formational experience for every young man who comes to the Prep today and in the years to come.

John Marinacci P ’27
33rd President of St. Joseph’s Prep

Generations in the Making

Following the devastating fire in 1966 that destroyed two-thirds of the school’s campus, the Prep’s Jesuit leadership was at a crossroads; they made the crucial determination to remain in North Philadelphia, a pivotal decision that has impacted the formation of generations of young men and continues to be a source of pride for every student who comes to 17th & Girard.

Not only did the Jesuits mark their commitment to North Philadelphia by rebuilding the school, but they also planned to create a campus that would define the Prep as the leading high school in Philadelphia. Forever the Prep will COMPLETE THE VISION FOR OUR CAMPUS and SECURE OUR MISSION for generations to come.

A Moment Decades in the Making

From its earliest days, the Prep has evolved to meet the needs of its students in the present while planning for the future. Father Villiger’s move to 17th & Stiles, Fr. Ayd’s commitment to 17th & Girard, Fr. Sauter’s dedication to strategic growth—there has always been a vision to serve our mission today while planning for tomorrow. Always bold and with utter conviction, the Prep has grown to new heights because of deep roots. This has sustained us for 175 years. Forever the Prep is the cornerstone on which we will build the next 175.

Together, we will fulfill the Jesuit vision for North Philadelphia.

Together, we will be Forever the Prep.

Donor Profile

J. Craig Hadden ’75

Craig and Betty Hadden (center) at a recent Prep Classic when their gift to the Forever the Prep Campaign was announced. They are with Campaign Co-Chair Bill McKernan ’87 and President John Marinacci.

When Craig Hadden was considering a gift to the Forever the Prep Campaign, his wife Betty encouraged him to think big.

“She knows how much I love the Prep and she suggested that it was time for us to step it up and do more than we ever had before,” he says. After all, Betty and Craig have always been generous to the Prep, a place that is dear to his family. “As I get older, I find that I want to do more to support those organizations that have meant the most to me and the Prep is one of those very dear to my heart.”

Hadden adds that he wants to make sure that a Prep education is available to current and future students as it was to him. “I am so appreciative of the opportunities that I’ve had, the things that I was taught through those opportunities,” he says. “We have to understand that those coming up behind us will not have those opportunities without us.”

When first asked why he wanted to support the Forever the Prep Campaign, Hadden smiled and said “I’ll do anything for the Prep. Whenever I am asked, I am happy to do it.” However, he added that the specifics of the campaign appealed to him. As an Eagle Scout, “creating an outdoor campus was very appealing to me,” he says. “Giving our students a chance to be outside in the city by creating a campus is very important.”

He and his 1975 classmates were among the first freshmen classes to arrive at the “new” Prep building after the campus was rebuilt and opened in 1969. He knows the importance of the decision to stay at 17th & Girard. “This project says that we recognize the value of that decision: we stayed here, we belong here, we are not going anywhere,” Hadden says. “It says that we are going to continue what we have been doing for 175 years.”

Lorie and Nick Howley '70 and The Howley Foundation Make Historic $74 Million Gift to Forever the Prep Campaign

Lorie and Nick Howley and The Howley Foundation have pledged $74 million to St. Joseph’s Prep’s Forever the Prep Campaign. This represents the largest gift ever given to a Catholic high school in the United States.

This gift, which is dedicated to transforming the Prep’s North Philadelphia campus, expanding the Howley Scholars Program, and increasing the school’s endowment, serves as the cornerstone for the school’s Forever the Prep Campaign. With this latest commitment, the Howleys’ total investment in St. Joseph’s Prep is $80 million.

The $74 million gift is an investment in sustaining and growing the 175 year-old mission of providing a formative experience for students and realizing the vision of an ambitious campus plan for the school’s historic North Philadelphia home.

A portion of the gift is the foundation for funding a total transformation of St. Joseph‘s Prep urban campus, where it has resided since 1866. The Howley Campus and Howley Athletic Complex include purpose-built outdoor academic, athletic, spiritual, and social spaces.

The gift will also increase and expand the current Howley Scholars Program to provide annual full-tuition scholarships for 80 Prep students – 20 in each grade. The Prep Howley Scholars are high-achieving students who do not have the resources to access a Prep education. In addition to financial support, Nick, Lorie and their daughter Meg stay apprised of the Scholars’ academic progress, visit school, and take pride in the Scholars’ many accomplishments.

“This gift from Lorie, Nick, and The Howley Foundation helps fulfill the dream the Jesuits had for St. Joseph’s Prep when they chose to rebuild in North Philadelphia sixty years ago,” said President John Marinacci. “Our predecessors had a long-term vision for our institution, our mission and our campus; today, the Howleys’ incredible generosity ignites the support that is needed for their vision to become our reality.”

Pursuing this project is a testament to the Prep’s pride in its relationship with the city and the neighborhood, to which the school recommitted when it decided to rebuild in the same location following a devastating fire in 1966. Founded in 1851, St. Joseph’s Prep is well-known for serving a diverse population of students who hail from more than 175 zip codes from throughout the Delaware Valley. Counted among its alumni are well-known political and business figures in the Philadelphia area, and from its early days the school has been known for forming leaders who have had impact around the world. Nick Howley is an alumnus of the school.

“Lorie and Nick are remarkable in their commitment to education in Philadelphia and beyond,” says Betsy Courtney, Vice President for Advancement. “Their investment in the future of St. Joseph’s Prep is an example of the great value our alumni place on their Catholic, Jesuit education and its impact well beyond their time here.”

The Howley Foundation was established in 2003, with the intent of helping students, regardless of economic means, receive the best education possible. The Howleys firmly believe that education is one of the most important catalysts to promote positive change in individuals and society as a whole. Starting with one student scholarship in a local Cleveland Catholic high school, they have grown the Foundation and the Howley Scholars Program to provide meaningful tuition assistance to approximately 1,500 scholarship students across the country. Historically tuition assistance by The Howley Foundation has been provided primarily for high schools in the Cleveland and Philadelphia areas. However, in recent years it has been expanded to include scholarship support and selected program assistance in expanded geographical areas at the grade school and college levels .

“Over the last decade, Lorie and I have seen the impact that our support has made on the young men at the Prep and their trajectory into the future,” says Nick Howley, Chairman of The Howley Foundation, Board Chair/Founder of TransDigm Group Inc., an NYSE-listed producer of aerospace products, and Board Chair/Founder of Perimeter Solutions, Inc., an NYSE-listed provider of forest fire fighting products and services. “As a Trustee, I’ve developed tremendous confidence in the school leadership’s vision for the future and know it is worthy of our investment in the mission.”

“On behalf of everyone at St. Joseph’s Prep, I cannot begin to express how grateful we are to Lorie, Nick, and The Howley Foundation. It is rare that we are able to point to a defining moment in the history of an institution while it is happening. This transformational gift is one of those moments. It will forever impact the future of St. Joseph’s Prep, and we are proud to recognize this by ensuring the Howley name is known for generations to come,” Marinacci says.

Forever the Prep: Rooted in Vision. Driven by Mission.

A Letter from Nick Howley ’70

Dear Prep Family,

In my philanthropic work with the Howley Foundation, I have the opportunity to interact with many schools throughout the nation. I have to say, there is something special about the St. Joseph’s Prep experience that keeps me connected to this wonderful school, even 50-plus years after graduation.

The mix of quality academics combined with strong character formation is the essence of what my wife, Lorie, and I believe defines a high-quality education. No one does it better than the Prep. The Prep Works!!

I believe in the Forever the Prep project and am happy to put my name behind it and serve as Honorary Co-Chair. Also, Lorie and I have committed $74 million financially to make this dream a reality for the Prep community. As a Trustee, I’ve developed tremendous confidence in the school leadership’s vision for the future and strongly believe it is worthy of our investment.

I hope that our alumni will join us in supporting what I believe is the most impactful project since the Prep rebuilt in 1966.

Go Prep!

A Letter from John Dawley P ’25

Dear Prep Nation,

When my wife, Abby, and I decided to send our son, Christian ’25, to the Prep, we knew we were joining something special. What we couldn’t have fully imagined then was just how extraordinary this community truly is. So when I was invited to join the Board of Trustees in 2023, I jumped at the opportunity to help lead the Prep forward and play a role in shaping its future.

As parents, we have seen firsthand the profound impact the Prep has on young men during one of the most formative periods of their lives. The Prep does far more than educate—it forms boys into men who are prepared to lead with character, serve with purpose, and make a meaningful difference in the world. That belief is why Abby and I have chosen to be deeply involved and why I am proud to serve as a co-chair of the Forever the Prep campaign.

The Prep is dreaming big—and it should. Its mission matters. Its impact reaches far beyond campus walls. It matters to our students, to our neighborhood, and to our city.

But bold dreams only become reality when a community rallies behind them. We are inspired by the many philanthropic leaders who have already stepped forward because they see what we see: an extraordinary opportunity and a defining moment that calls for action.

Thank you for all that you do for the Prep. We know you will join us in bringing this Jesuit vision for North Philadelphia fully to life.

Sincerely,

John Dawley P ’25

A Letter from Bill McKernan ’87, P ’22, ’25

Dear Prep Nation,

For the past ten years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the extraordinary growth of the Prep. During that time, our alumni, parents, and friends have come together to accomplish remarkable things:

  • A more than 300% of our endowment to more than $56,000,000
  • Creation of more than 90 new scholarships
  • Transforming Villiger Hall into a state-of-the-art academic and co-curricular home
  • Completion of major improvements to the Church of Gesu.

These achievements are powerful proof of what our community can accomplish when we rally together.

Now, with the Forever the Prep Campaign, we are setting our sights even higher. We are thinking bigger. We are thinking bolder. This is the largest campaign in Prep history, and my wife Cindy and I are incredibly proud to be part of it—because of what it will mean for our students today and for generations to come.

This campus plan was first envisioned by the Jesuits when they committed to remaining at 17th and Girard. Forever the Prep brings that vision fully to life. The moment is here. The time is now. Together, let us answer the call to serve, lead, and build the future of the Prep.

I invite you to join Cindy and me in making this dream a reality. It is something only a community like ours could imagine—and it will happen because of you.

Go Prep!
